Nawuri is one of the Guan languages spoken in northern Ghana with a population of about 25,000. The Nawuri live mainly in and around Kpandai District, traditionally a Nawuri enclave, which lies about 60 km east of Salaga on the west bank of the Oti river. However, today there are large communities of other language speakers, particularly Konkomba, in the district. Although linguistically Guan is closely related to Akan which is spoken in the south of the country, Guan communities are found in northern Ghana. Nawuri is classified among the Volta-Comoe sub-group of Kwa languages, which include the Guan languages spoken by the Gonja people (Ngbanyito), the Nchumuru (Nchumburu) and the Nawuri.
