Kasem in Ghana

Size

With speakers numbering about 250,000 on both sides of the Ghana-Burkina Faso border, Kasem is spoken in north eastern Ghana in the Navrongo, Paga and Chiana enclaves, as well as in some smaller areas in the Upper East Region, some villages in the Tumu district and in southeastern Burkina Faso. Kasem is one of the languages that receives sponsorship from the government of Ghana. Kasem has a written tradition that was promoted by the Catholic missionaries who arrived in Navrongo in 1906 and established mission schools in this town the following year. The translation of the Bible, prayer book and hymns into Kasem also enhanced its uptake by the community.
