Names
Gonja in Ghana
Size
Also called "Ngbanya" or "Nganyito", Gonja is one of the Guan languages spoken in northern Ghana. These languages, which include Nchumuru and Nawuri, belong to the Volta-Comoe group of Kwa languages. Although Guan is closely related to Akan which is spoken in the south of Ghana, Guan communities are found in northern Ghana. Gonja is the largest the largest Guan group in Ghana and the only Guan language in Ghana which is sponsored by the government, which means that it is taught in schools and used in radio and television broadcasts. Gonja is spoken in Salaga, Damongo and Bole in the Savannah Region of Ghana.
