Vagla in Ghana

Vagla is one of the languages widely spoken in the Bole District of the Savannah Region of Ghana. It is a Gur language. The Vagla are said to have migrated from among the Sisaala around the 15th century. The language is therefore closely related to Sisaali and also to Tampuli and Mo/Deg. It is taught in basic schools but not examinable at a higher level. Vagla has been part of the project of the Ghana Institute of Linguistics, Literacy and Bible Translation (GILLBT) since 1962. GILLBT has been able to translate both the Old and New Testaments into Vagla. A Vagla dictionary and some handbooks for beginners and adult literacy programmes have also been published.
